Tweede protest in Rhenen
Afgelopen zaterdag zijn we voor een tweede keer naar ‘t Kalkoentje in Rhenen gegaan voor een luidruchtig protest. Van de 4 restaurants waarmee we contact hebben opgenomen omtrent de verkoop van foie gras in Rhenen, is dit het enige restaurant die de verkoop toch door zet. Het enige restaurant dat blijkbaar geen compassie heeft voor dieren, en het enige restaurant dat geen verantwoordelijkheid durft te nemen voor het eigen menu.
Met maar liefst 4 megafoons zorgden we ervoor dat bezoekers en voorbijgangers niet om ons verhaal heen konden. Met meerdere speeches, slogans en sirenes trokken we volop de aandacht. Ondanks het feit dat dit restaurant gelegen is aan een industrieterrein, hebben we toch het idee dat we behoorlijk wat mensen hebben kunnen informeren over het dierenleed achter foie gras. En dat is belangrijk: niet alleen willen we natuurlijk dat het restaurant foie gras uit het menu schrapt, ook willen we dat mensen het product niet meer bestellen. En waarom zou je ook? Het is onbegrijpelijk dat er anno 2023 nog mensen zijn die een bijdrage willen leveren aan het in stand houden van deze gruwelijke industrie.
In nieuwsberichten probeert de eigenaar op allerlei mogelijke manieren de verantwoordelijkheid af te schuiven. Onze beelden zouden niet meer actueel zijn, de politiek moet er maar iets aan doen, we misbruiken het demonstratierecht met onze protesten en het zou ons helemaal niet om foie gras te doen zijn. Los van dat de meest recente beelden van december 2022 zijn, en het niet mogelijk lijkt te zijn de verkoop van foie gras te verbieden, is het toch ook een vreemde gedachte: waarom moet een politicus bepalen hoe het menu er bij ‘t Kalkoentje uit moet zien? Ook bij dit restaurant zijn ze vast in staat zelf te kunnen nadenken of bepaalde ingrediënten nog wel van deze tijd zijn. Een hint: foie gras is dat niet.
We hopen dan ook dat ‘t Kalkoentje snel tot inkeer komt en foie gras uit het menu schrapt. En anders zijn we er binnenkort weer terug; want we gaan door tot foie gras overal van het menu is verdwenen.

Second protest in Rhenen
Last Saturday we went to ‘t Kalkoentje in Rhenen for a second time for a noisy protest. Of the 4 restaurants we have contacted regarding the sale of foie gras in Rhenen, this is the only restaurant that refused to stop selling foie gras, the only restaurant that apparently has no compassion for animals, and the only restaurant that does not dare to take responsibility for its own menu.
With no less than 4 megaphones, we ensured that visitors and passers-by could not ignore our story. With several speeches, slogans and sirens, we attracted plenty of attention. Despite the fact that this restaurant is located on an industrial estate, we still felt that we were able to inform quite a few people about the animal suffering behind the production of foie gras — And that is important: not only do we want the restaurant to remove foie gras from the menu, we also want people to stop ordering the product. And why should you? It is incomprehensible that in 2023 there are still people who want to contribute to the maintenance of this horrific industry.
In news reports, the owner has tried to shift his responsibility away from himself in all kinds of ways. Our images are apparently no longer up to date, politicians should handle it, we are abusing the right to demonstrate with our protests and stopping foie gras would not even be the goal of our anti-foie gras campaign. Apart from the fact that the most recent images are from December 2022, and it is not legally possible to ban the sale of foie gras, it is also a strange thought: why does a politician have to determine what the menu should look like at ‘t Kalkoentje? Also at this restaurant they are probably capable to think for themselves if certain ingredients are still ethically acceptable in the year 2023. A hint: foie gras is not.
We hope that ‘t Kalkoentje will think twice and remove foie gras from the menu. Otherwise, we’ll be back soon; Because we keep going until foie gras is gone from the menu everywhere.
